SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Hunters killed more than 13,500 wild turkeys during the spring season that just ended.

The preliminary numbers were down about 600 from the previous year.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the highest numbers were recorded in Jo Daviess County in the far northwest section of the state. Hunters there harvested nearly 600 birds.



The top county in the southern part of the state was Jefferson, with about 400 turkeys.
