OAK BROOK, Ill. (AP) - Police say more than 100 people have been arrested at a large demonstration outside McDonald’s suburban Chicago headquarters.
Oak Brook, Illinois, police spokesman George Peterson says an estimated 1,000-1,500 protesters joined the demonstration Wednesday that was meant to call attention to low pay earned by fast-food workers.
He says demonstrators were peaceful, but officers arrested 110 protesters who violated a village criminal trespassing ordinance by walking onto McDonald’s property. They were being released after promising to appear for a future court date.
Peterson says about 200 officers from local, county and state departments helped with crowd control.
The demonstration comes ahead of the fast-food chain’s annual shareholders meeting Thursday, where it’s also expected to be confronted on issues including its executive pay packages and marketing to children and minority communities.
