ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) - The St. George City Council has agreed to spend $450,000 worth of federal grants to help establish a new homeless shelter and provide other services for low-income residents.

The single biggest expenditure is $250,000 for the homeless shelter expansion.

City officials say they hope to build or acquire a facility that could house other services in addition the shelter, such as a food bank, counseling and employment assistance.

City Manager Gary Eplin told The (St. George) Spectrum (https://tinyurl.com/pasl6ek) local nonprofits and charities have done a good job of addressing needs over the years but he says an expansion makes sense given continued demand at the county’s only 52-bed shelter in St. George.

Last year more than 600 people amassed more than 13,000 stays there, including many families and children.
