ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Rockford library officials are debating whether to relocate the main branch during a planned environmental cleanup.

WNIJ Radio reports (https://bit.ly/1kNiflu ) the property was once part of a gas plant where coal tar was stored underground.

Library Executive Director Frank Novak says one option is to temporarily relocate the facility’s contents. Another proposal is to find a new, permanent home.

Because of the weight of the books and other printed material, library officials need to be careful about where they relocate.

Novak says any move - even a temporary one - will need a lot of planning. That’s because all the items will need to be carefully moved “because you can’t just have a big pile of books and work from there.”

The environmental work is expected to start in 2016.
