CHICAGO (AP) - The Illinois Department of Transportation says more than 40 new members have been selected for an important advisory body on freight issues.
The council represents both private and public sectors and advises IDOT on ways to improve freight traffic statewide.
Illinois is one of the nation’s primary transportation hubs. State officials say more than 700 million tons of freight moves in and out of Illinois each year by rail, truck, barge and other modes of transportation.
The new members of the Illinois State Freight Advisory Council include representatives from the shipping and freight industries, agriculture, academia and local government.
Among the initial focuses of the council will be helping to complete a long-range transportation plan and a freight mobility plan.
