PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A bridge in downtown Prattville could be named after former Prattville Mayor Jim Byard Jr.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports (https://on.mgmadv.com/1bpikWu) that a resolution calling for the name is being considered in the Alabama legislature. It was introduced by state Sen. Bryan Taylor, a Republican from Prattville.
The bridge, which crosses Autauga Creek on Alabama Highway 206, opened in 2011. It replaced an outdated span that was built in the 1940s.
Byard was elected to the Prattville City Council in 1992. He served one term as council president before becoming mayor in 1999 following the death of David Whetstone Jr. After being elected to several more terms, he resigned as mayor in January 2011 to become director of the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.
