Bahrain is home to the U.S.Navy’s 5th Fleet, and it may soon be home to a new group of Marines who will serve as as America’s Quick Reaction Force (QRF) in the Middle East.
With U.S. personnel out of Iraq and withdrawing from Afghanistan, the existence of the newly created QRF in the region would allow officials to deal with sudden security needs, as was required with the U.S. Embassy terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, in 2012.
The Marines in Spain are able to take off for a mission “within an hour” of getting orders.
Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Eric Flanagan told USA Today that the plans have not yet been finalized.
