GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - A former Greeley funeral director has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for stealing more than $31,000 from clients who prepaid for funeral services.

Paul Acuna was sentenced in Weld County District Court on Wednesday.

The Greeley Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/LCGmXe) that Acuna took advantage of a government funeral assistance program and stole thousands of dollars from low-income clients of Paul’s Funeral Service and Cremation.

A jury convicted Acuna of one count of theft and 11 counts of forgery in December. The forgery involved contracts that enabled Acuna to take funds from a Department of Human Services program that helps low-income families afford funeral arrangements.

Acuna also pleaded guilty to one count of theft involving 13 victims.

The court still is deciding how much Acuna must pay in restitution.
