NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey doctor has been convicted of receiving cash kickbacks for diagnostic testing referrals.

Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Maryam Jafari now faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Her sentencing date has not yet been determined.

She was convicted Wednesday on a conspiracy count and two counts of violating the federal health care anti-kickback statute. Jurors deliberated for two hours before returning their verdict, which culminated a three-week trial.

Jafari’s internal medicine practice was based in Newark. Prosecutors say she solicited and received cash kickbacks from a diagnostic facility in Orange from 2010 through December 2011.

She got the money in exchange for MRIs and CAT scans she referred to the diagnostic testing facility.
