MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - A suburban Atlanta county is adding 40 police officer positions after its top public safety official resigned, saying the police force he led was under-staffed and under-equipped.

The Marietta Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1o5r4Ho) that the Cobb County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday night agreed to add 40 additional police officer positions to the 609 already authorized.

County Chairman Tim Lee pledged that the 40 additional officers was only a first step to address concerns about public safety.

Jack Forsythe, the county’s public safety director, resigned in January. He said at the time that he was blocked from making needed reforms. He also expressed frustration at what he considered a lack of funding and resources needed to provide adequate protection for residents in the county northwest of Atlanta.
