GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) - A drainage ditch is not just a drainage ditch.

A new program of the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality is designed to raise public awareness of the importance of keeping clean streams of any size that drain into the area’s bayous and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.

The Mississippi Press reports (https://bit.ly/1c4gCdT ) Gautier is the first city on the Gulf Coast to participate in MDEQ’s stream sign initiative.

Five locations in Gautier have already been marked by the bright blue signs that call attention to how ditches, creeks and streams affect the overall environment. The first five of 10 locations marked by the city are for Mary Walker, Graveline, Sioux, Castille and Pierre bayous.
