PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A state probation officer who worked in the sex offender unit has been convicted by a federal jury of several child pornography charges.

The U.S. attorney’s office says 59-year-old Gerald J. Silva of Coventry was convicted on Monday on all charges, including six counts of receiving child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

Prosecutors said an investigation showed that Silva had purchased 75 videos depicting child pornography from a Toronto company and had them shipped to his home.

Silva faces a minimum of five years in prison, and was ordered taken into custody immediately. His sentencing was scheduled for May 16.
