Kentucky Gov. Steven Beshear said actress Ashley Judd could be a “very serious candidate” to fight for incumbent Sen. Mitch McConnell’s seat if she chose to run.

“I talked to Ashley Judd during the Kentucky Ball that was part of the inaugural ceremonies in Washington in January,” the Democratic governor told reporters at the state capitol in Frankfort on Thursday. “And then she’s been trying to arrange, and will be arranging, some more conversations here in the next month or so.”

He went on to call her “a very serious candidate” in a pool of “others that would be also.”

Reports about Miss Judd’s intentions to run against Mr. McConnell have varied. She dined with top Democrat politicos in Louisville, a Kentucky news site reports.

Perez Hilton reports the 44-year-old actress traveled to Washington this week to test the waters for a Senate run, meeting with members of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in the meanwhile.

Mr. Beshear lost his own Senate race against Mr. McConnell in 1996.
