ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - A video featuring a group of Aberdeen women has racked up more than one million views on Facebook.
The Aberdeen American News produced the video in March 2015 featuring women from Our Savior Lutheran Church who crochet used plastic bags into sleeping mats. The how-to video got a handful of views in the months following its release, but there was a surge in views, shares and comments starting in February.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the video had roughly 1.45 million views on Facebook. The roughly 90-second video also had about 45,000 shares and 1,300 comments, many of which are complimentary or ask how the mats are made.
Some of the women who help say they’ve referred people to the video, but can’t understand how it got so many views, the newspaper (https://bit.ly/1U8ZkXc ) reported.
“Oh, my goodness,” Rayma Scepaniak said when told how many times the video has been viewed. “Oh, my goodness. Yeah, I can’t explain that.”
Scepaniak said the women still gather to make mats, talk, drink coffee and eat treats Monday afternoons.
Gwen Petrich said the mats have been sent to countries including India, Haiti and the Philippines. She said she didn’t expect so much attention on Facebook, but is OK with it if it helps the mission.
“I guess that’s all right,” she said, “if it’s for a good cause.”
