Rep. Maxine Waters said Tuesday that former President Donald Trump should be charged with premeditated murder for allegedly inciting last month’s riot at the U.S. Capitol that left five people dead.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” the California Democrat alleged the former president had “advanced planning” of the Capitol invasion by his supporters protesting the results of the 2020 election.

“There’s information that some of the planning came out of individuals working in his campaign,” Ms. Waters claimed. “As a matter of fact, he absolutely should be charged with premeditated murder because of the lives that were lost with this invasion with his insurrection.”

Ms. Waters was likely referencing a report by The Associated Press that said members of Mr. Trump’s failed reelection campaign played “key roles” in planning and funding the “Stop the Steal” rally that took place at the Ellipse before and during the riot at the Capitol building more than a mile and a half away.

Ms. Waters said Mr. Trump‘s words “initiated” the riot and that the invaders believed they had his blessing.

“For the president of the United States to sit and watch the invasion and the insurrection and not say a word because he knew that he had absolutely initiated it — and as some of them said, ‘he invited us to come. We’re here at the invitation of the president of the United States,’” she said.

Ms. Waters said she was locked in her office while the invasion took place.

The congresswoman said she’s used to fearing for her life because of her criticism of Mr. Trump.

“Because I took on this president early, I called for his impeachment early, I have been threatened time and time again,” she said.
