Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates on Thursday compared President Trump’s supporters to Nazi-era Germans who ignored or even profited from the Holocaust.
Ms. Oates, a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, argued that Mr. Trump’s supporters are taking the same approach to the coronavirus pandemic that the Germans took to Nazi rule, the Washington Free Beacon first reported.
“[F]or many pro-T***p Americans, the pandemic is like the Holocaust to many Germans: they knew what was happening but adjusted to living with it in indifference or, in some cases, profiting from it,” Ms. Oates, has long refused to type out the full name of Mr. Trump, tweeted to her 211,000 followers.
“[O]nly if affected personally do people seem to care,” she added.
Ms. Oates was criticized for the tweet, and it’s not the first time. In 2016, she said Mr. Trump’s supporters would “cheer” if Hillary Clinton was murdered.
In 2015, she lamented hearing only negative things about the Islamic State.
“All we hear of ISIS is puritanical & punitive; is there nothing celebratory & joyous? Or is query naive?” she wrote at the time.
