Late-night comedian Bill Maher went off on “woke liberals” and their branding of the “defund the police” movement during his monologue Friday night, saying they’re taking something positive like police reform and turning into something radical that most Americans won’t support.

“Liberals want to take police money — police funds — and divert it to community services, which sounds like a very good thing, a good idea, but they’re calling it ‘defund the police,’ which sounds bad,” Mr. Maher said on his HBO show “Real Time.”

“That is so ‘Democrats’ for you,” he continued. “They must have meetings to be this [expletive] stupid about politics. ‘Hey, guys, we’re making some headway here, how can we turn this into something that makes people have to vote for Trump?’”

Mr. Maher added that he agrees funds should be diverted from local police departments to other areas like education, but that the word “defund” sends the wrong message.

“I think it’s a terrible way to put it,” he said.

Later on his show, during a discussion with comedian Larry Wilmore and journalist Matt Welch, Mr. Maher said “woke liberals” are painting themselves into a corner on police reform ahead of the November election.

“I worry that Democrats are wandering into another purity test that’s not going to serve them well, and it’s going to be about how much you want to get rid of police altogether,” he said.

“They’re horrible. They put themselves in this no-win box and they did it to themselves,” he added.
