MSNBC host Chris Matthews continued his dire prediction for Democrats Monday night after the Iowa Democratic Party failed to release the results of the state’s presidential caucuses.
“The guy in the White House is chuckling all night here, showing the Democrats can’t even get a three-car funeral organized or whatever you want to call it,” Mr. Matthews told MSNBC’s Brian Williams and Rachel Maddow. “I would say to the people of Iowa, ‘Will the last person leaving Des Moines, please turn out the lights?’ This has not been a success.”
“All night long we’ve used the word viability, and I think we have to ask ourselves about the viability of the Iowa caucuses as an institution to start off this decision this country has to make to find someone to challenge Trump,” he continued, Newsbusters reported. “But also the viability of the Democratic Party. I really think it’s got a problem going forward.”
Mr. Matthews went on to say that Democrats will have a “real disaster” on their hands if they can’t find a “serious challenger” to President Trump.
The comments come as the country still awaits the results of the Iowa caucuses in what Democrats and Republican alike have characterized as a complete debacle. Iowa Democratic Party officials on Tuesday blamed the unprecedented delay on a “coding issue” in its reporting app and promised to release the caucus results “as soon as possible.”
Mr. Matthews similarly criticized the Democratic Party earlier Monday when he declared that he’s “still looking” for a candidate who can beat Mr. Trump.
“I’m not happy. I’m not happy with this field,” Mr. Matthews said during a discussion on “Morning Joe” in Des Moines. “I think they got to find a candidate for president that can beat Trump.”
