An AARP executive has sparked the ire of younger generations after she appeared to clap back at the viral “OK boomer” meme by touting her own generation’s wealth.

Myrna Blyth, a senior vice president at AARP who also serves as editorial director of AARP media, made the quip while discussing the nonprofit’s print and digital presence with Axios on Tuesday.


“OK, millennials, but we’re the people that actually have the money,” the 80-year-old executive said, Axios reported.

Ms. Blyth’s comment appeared to be a response to the “OK boomer” meme that has become a favorite, and arguably ageist, social media put-down that dismisses attitudes stereotypically attributed to the baby boomer generation. It gained significant popularity earlier this month after 25-year-old New Zealand lawmaker Chlöe Swarbrick used it to fire back at an older colleague who raised an objection during her remarks on climate change.

Ms. Blyth’s comment Tuesday sparked a wave of backlash on social media, prompting her to clarify.

“Blyth’s point is that ad and marketing execs routinely pit generations against one another and overlook older people, especially older women,” AARP’s media relations editorial manager, Colby Nelson, said in a statement, The Washington Post reported.

Mr. Nelson said AARP, which markets to Americans in the 50-plus demographic, deeply cares about issues like income inequality, The Post reported.
