The 8-year-old child actor who became a viral sensation for satirizing Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is officially retiring the impersonation due to the left’s barrage of harassment and threats, her family said.
Ava won over the hearts of conservatives earlier this year for her videos mocking Ms. Ocasio-Cortez for her speaking style and socialist policies.
“I want to tell you about my plan to single-handedly save the planet,” the 8-year-old says in one video. “I call it the Green New Deal. I picked green because I’m still learning my colors.”
But while Ava’s family said the feedback has been mostly positive, the negative backlash had recently taken a scary turn.
“The Left’s Harassment and death threats have gone too far for our family. We have been getting calls on our personal phone numbers,” Ava’s stepfather Salvatore Schachter tweeted Wednesday, Fox News reported. “For our safety and for our child’s safety, we deleted all Mini AOC accounts.”
Mr. Schachter told Fox News that the negativity became “increasingly personal, dark, and dangerous” after Ava reenacted photographs that Ms. Ocasio-Cortez took outside a migrant detention facility at the southern border last year.
“Every time I plan a visit to the park it’s closed,” Ava said in a caption accompanying the photos in a now-deleted tweet obtained by Newsweek. “Can everyone see how sad this makes me?”
Mr. Schachter said his daughter is “disappointed” that she will no longer be able to impersonate the congresswoman.
“She’s disappointed at not doing Mini AOC going forward but we explained that this is for the best and she’s OK with it,” he told Fox News.
“The world has seen Ava’s beauty, talent, and charm, which was the whole reason for Mini AOC to begin with and no amount of hate or anger will change that,” he said. “Also, like Ava says, ‘try using your words.’”
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a prolific social media user, has yet to condemn the alleged threats against Ava.
