Former NFL running back Herschel Walker said he still believes Donald Trump is the best person to lead America, despite anti-Muslim comments he made last week that sparked rebukes from several retired athletes.
Mr. Walker, who played for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals when Mr. Trump owned the team and appeared as a contestant on “Celebrity Apprentice,” has supported the Republican presidential front-runner since he announced his bid this summer.
Mr. Walker said his opinion hasn’t changed since Mr. Trump called for a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants entering the United States, which sparked widespread backlash, including from Charles Barkley and Muhammad Ali.
“Donald has said what he’s said, but his numbers haven’t gone down,” Mr. Walkertold TMZ. “That’s a sign he is saying the things that people think, but are afraid to say themselves. Donald is saying what people want to hear.
“Look, we can’t build a wall and not let people in the country,” he said. “But we do have to get this country safe. We have to quit being politically correct.
“We have to do what’s right to save America. … I guarantee you [Mr. Trump] would do better than a lot of people in office now. That I can tell you for a fact,” he added.
