AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - A sixth North Texas lake has been found to be infested with zebra mussels.
A Texas Parks and Wildlife Department statement on Tuesday says water samples taken by the U.S. Geological Survey recently from Lake Lavon, northeast of Dallas, tested positive for zebra mussel DNA and its larvae.
Currently, boaters in 17 counties in North Texas are required to clean, dry and drain all watercraft before and after entering lakes and streams. These same regulations also are in place on an emergency basis in Belton and Coryell counties.
On Thursday, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission will decide whether to add 30 more North and Central Texas counties.
Zebra mussels were first confirmed in Texas in Lake Texoma in 2009. The pesky creatures can clog pipes and damage boat motors.
