Democrat James Averhart

James Averhart is a 2020 Democratic candidate seeking election to the U.S. House representing Alabama's 1st Congressional District. He seeks election to the seat vacated by incumbent Republican Bradley Byrne, who lost in his bid for the U.S. Senate to represent Alabama and unseat incumbent Democrat Sen. Doug Jones. Averhart earned an undergraduate and a masters degree from the American Military University. He also earned a doctorate degree in Theology and Biblical Studies from the North Carolina College of Theology and Seminary. He is a retired U.S. Marine and the President and CEO of J.T. Averhart Group (JTAG), a non-profit organization that facilitates ex-offenders’ re-entry into society. He currently serves as Executive Director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Mobile.
