Comedian Samantha Bee has reached her $1 million fundraising goal for Planned Parenthood, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The TBS host told THR her “Nasty Woman” T-Shirt campaign has proven successful and credited her fans for having “really stepped up.”
“… We’re really floored,” Miss Bee added, noting the global response to her fundraising effort, which former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton herself joined earlier this week.
Mrs. Clinton is the titular “nasty woman” who inspired the effort after then-Republican nominee Donald Trump used the term to describe the former secretary of state during a presidential debate.
Liberal feminists have been particularly critical of congressional Republicans and the Trump administration over their expressed desire to end federal funding of Planned Parenthood clinics.
Earlier this year, Congress passed and Mr. Trump signed into law legislation loosening restrictions on how states may go about cutting off taxpayer funding for the organization.
But larger efforts to zero-out federal funding for Planned Parenthood face less certain prospects. While a defunding provision is included in the Obamacare repeal bill passed earlier this year by the GOP-controlled House, there’s no guarantee it survives long enough to reach Mr. Trump’s desk as part of an Obamacare repeal bill. At least two moderate Senate Republicans — Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — have expressed opposition to defunding Planned Parenthood.
For her part, Ms. Murkowski has gone on the record saying she is “committed” to keeping federal monies flowing to Planned Parenthood, Politico reported in June.
The congressional GOP also appears to remain divided on the prospect of tucking a Planned Parenthood defunding provision into spending legislation, with some leaders fearing a scenario where such a bill fails a floor vote for final passage.
