Report: Wittman to remain as Wizards coach

The Wizards will retain coach Randy Wittman, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports. Wittman and the team are in the final stages of completing a two-year contract, with a formal announcement to come next week.

Wittman has a career record of 118-236 in previous coaching stints with the Wizards, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Flip Saunders was fired after a 2-15 start and was replaced by Wittman, who finished 18-31, including a six-game winning streak to end the season.

Wittman simplified the playbook, juggled the lineup and had the benefit of veteran center Nene on the roster after the trading deadline when the team sent JaVale McGee to Denver and Nick Young to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Center Kevin Seraphin was one of several Wizards players who expressed a fondness for Wittman.

“I really like this coach, because he gives me my opportunity,” Seraphin said the day after the regular season ended. “I like Flip, too [but] he didn’t really let me play, so I like Witt. After Flip left, I had a meeting with him [Wittman]. He was like, ‘Now you will get your opportunity, you will play.’ He give me confidence and everything.”
