Wizards unlikely to offer McGee an early contract extension

← return to Wizards Watch

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the Wizards are unlikely to offer an early contract extension to center JaVale McGee.

The deadline for NBA teams to sign members of the 2008 draft class to early contract extensions is January 25.

The Wizards drafted the 7-foot-1 McGee from the University of Nevada in 2008 in the first round with the 18th overall pick. Now in his fourth season with the Wizards, McGee has career averages of 8.7 points, 1.8 blocks, and 5.7 rebounds per game.

This season, he’s averaging 11.2 points, 2.9 blocks and 9.1 rebounds per game.

If McGee does not sign a contrat extension by the end of the season, he’ll become a restricted free agent, giving the Wizards the option to match whatever free agent offers he might receive.
