The Tournament Within the Tournament, Final Results

← return to U.S. Open Watch

We have a winner. In our just-for-kicks Alternative Tournament – the one among the 11 players from the 1997 U.S. Open who returned to Congressional in 2011 – Lee Westwood shot a 70 in the final round and prevailed over Davis Love by three strokes. Westwood and Love also didn’t do too badly in the actual tournament, finishing tied for third and tied for 11th, respectively.

Phil Mickelson, completely demoralized by having to play with Rory McIlroy the first two days, brought up the rear. Here’s the final scoreboard:

The 1997 Returnees Invitational

278 (-6) Lee Westwood (75-68-65-70)

281 (-3) Davis Love (70-71-70-70)

283 (-1) Steve Stricker (75-69-69-70)

289 (+5) Paddy Harrington (71-73-72-73)

291 (+7) Phil Mickelson (74-69-77-71)
