ELMONT, N.Y. | I’ll Have Another will be scratched from Saturday’s Belmont Stakes and retired from horse racing. The colt was seeking to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, but a tendon injury will stand in the way of the shot at history.

I’ll Have Another galloped at 5:30 a.m. Friday, though assistant trainer Dennis O’Neill said a problem was discovered Thursday. He looked fine Friday morning, but when tendonitis showed again, the decision was made to end the horse’s career.

The injury is not life-threatening.

It’s a devastating, tragic turn of events and will undoubtedly be another significant blow to the sport.
