Nationals activate Mark DeRosa, place Xavier Nady on DL (plus lineups)

DENVER — The Washington Nationals activated Mark DeRosa from the disabled list Monday afternoon, clearing room for the right-handed veteran utility man by placing Xavier Nady on the disabled list with tendonitis in his right wrist.

DeRosa’s activation culminates a nearly two-month long process for him to get over a left oblique strain. During the course of his rehab, DeRosa’s father, Jack, became seriously ill with cancer and, unfortunately, passed away in early June. It has been a long few months for DeRosa but the Nationals players are certainly glad that he’ll be back and with them everyday again.

DeRosa will likely be used as a right-handed outfield option as well as Johnson’s primary backup infielder and will likely be used to spell Ryan Zimmerman at third base some as he plays through right AC joint inflammation.

DeRosa struggled out of the gate this season, getting just three hits in 37 at-bats before going down with the oblique strain in late April. DeRosa was 1-for-11 with three strikeouts and four walks in four rehab games with Single-A Potomac.

Nady has struggled to find his rhythm at the plate for much of the season, hitting .157 with with a .211 on-base percentage in a bench role. His wrist issue had not been previously disclosed. Nady, who has been injury-plagued throughout his career, including undergoing two Tommy John surgeries and breaking his left hand, becomes the 15th player the Nationals have placed on the disabled list this season.

DeRosa was not in the lineup Monday in Colorado but would be available off the bench.
