Alexander Semin is no longer property of the Washington Capitals, and as of 1:30 p.m. Sunday rumors were swirling about the possibility of his joining the Buffalo Sabres.

That’s just conjecture, though the panel on Canadian network TSN took the opportunity to crush Semin.

Stanley Cup-winning coach Marc Crawford said Semin had “no character” and called him a “complete loser.”

“He’ll be banished to a place like Columbus or something like that, and that’s what those guys do. They head to the island of misfit toys,” Crawford said, recommending the Detroit Red Wings sign Semin to put him with Pavel Datsyuk. “You either take a guy who’s a complete winner, or take a guy who’s a complete loser. He falls in that category.”

Immediately after, Pierre McGuire tore into the 28-year-old Russian winger.

“This is not a great teammate, I’m telling you right now. Not a good guy to have around your group unless you have unbelievably strong leadership,” McGuire. “He’s the ultimate coach killer, that’s what he is.”

Semin officially became an unrestricted free agent at noon. He spent seven seasons in Washington, the past two on one-year deals.

He’s fifth in franchise history in goals with 197. He has 15 goals in 51 career playoff games.
